It encompasses over 3,000 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, encompassing parts of five municipal districts: Mountain View County, Rocky View Municipality, Foothills No. 31 Municipal District, Kananaskis Improvement District, and the Stoney Nakoda First Nation reserve.

Kananaskis is situated in south-central Alberta, approximately 60 kilometers west kananaskiscasino.ca of Calgary. The region spans across an area where the Front Ranges of the Canadian Rockies meet the Foothills zone.
